Study finds Southern Europe’s fire weather has intensified even as fire numbers declined
A study published in Scientific Reports on July 31 found that hot, dry and windy conditions conducive to wildfire ignition and spread have intensified across Portugal, Spain, France, Italy and Greece since the 1980s. Researchers reported that extreme fire-weather days more than doubled in broad parts of the region, while summer fire-weather intensity in parts of France and Spain was up to 50% higher in 2016–2025 than in 1981–2010. At the same time, the study found that annual fire counts and burned area generally declined, which the authors linked to stronger suppression and prevention. The researchers warned that this combination can produce fewer but more severe fires when suppression capacity is exceeded.

NOAA awards Muon $2.51 million pilot to test commercial wildfire imagery
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said on July 31 that it had awarded Muon Space a $2.51 million Commercial Data Program contract for a wildfire-imagery pilot. Under the agreement, Muon is to provide multispectral infrared observations from one or more satellites for wildfire detection, characterization, monitoring and mapping. NOAA said the pilot will test whether commercially purchased observations can improve fire warnings and infrared-based detection, with performance evaluated by its satellite and wildland-fire teams. The stated performance period runs from August 3, 2026, through June 3, 2027. NOAA said a successful demonstration could lead to sustained purchases supplementing government-operated satellites; that future procurement remains conditional.
Why it matters: Faster and more detailed fire detection could improve evacuation warnings, firefighter safety and smoke-impact monitoring, although the pilot’s operational value has not yet been demonstrated.
